Twelve students from Waddell Elementary and seven students from Lylburn Downing Middle School participated in the 2024 Mickey Owens Memorial Chess Tournament in Roanoke on Feb. 24 and came out on top.
The Waddell team finished in first place in the elementary school division, and Lylburn Downing finished in first place in the middle school division.
Many of the Lexington players also won trophies for their individual performances.
Six of the seven players from Lylburn Downing finished in the top 10 in the middle school division. Rossel Soriano Caceres finished in first place with a perfect score of 4.0 points; Graham Shester finished second; Gibson Fox finished third; Alex Eastwood finished fourth; Tim Simon finished sixth; and Ben Phillips fi nished e ighth. M aryn Osbourne barely missed the top 10 – she finished the tournament in 11th place overall.
Four of the Waddell players finished in the top 10 in the elementary division. Rayyan Maktoomi finished in first place with a perfect score of 4.0 points; Ahmad Hasan finished fourth; Theo Buenafe finished fifth; and Eli Wollner finished eighth.
