You Don’t Have To Eat Alone

Laughter and conversation shared over a meal is one of the rituals that can enrich our lives. But for many of us, the loss of a spouse, distant family and friends, or our own deteriorating health can mean mealtime is a solitary experience.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly a quarter of adults aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated, putting them at risk for malnutrition, dementia, and other serious medical conditions.

“No Senior Eats Alone” is a call-to-action for all community members to improve the quality of life of our elderly population by encouraging shared meals.

When older adults dine with others, it improves nutrition, builds emotional and mental well-being and can even lead to longer, more independent lives.

VPAS Cafes provide an opportunity for a congregate meal experience with other community members. Cafes are located in Lexington, Buena Vista and Goshen, and welcome all adults 60 and over. Participants enjoy a delicious meal, as well as social activities, games, exercise and educational programming. The locations and schedule are as follows:

• Lexington Cafe: Rockbridge Area Relief Association (RARA) building, each Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 350 Spotswood Drive.

• Buena Vista Cafe: Maury River Senior Services Center, each Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 2137 Magnolia Ave.

• Goshen Cafe: Goshen Fire Department, each Monday, 10:30 to 12:30 p.m., 9696 Maury River Road. -There are many other ways to ensure that no senior eats alone and build your own sense of personal fulfillment at the same time.

Invite the person who lives across the street out to lunch or offer to bring dinner to her. Host a special meal with activities at your local church or organization. Share lunch and sports stats with a coworker or fellow volunteer.

We have much to learn from one another, and your kindness can impact others in ways you may never know. Even one meal can make a difference for an older adult who is struggling with loneliness or depression. It can also provide inspiration for a new hobby, motivation to engage more with the community, or simply evidence that someone cares.

There is no cost to participate in VPAS Cafes, but reservations for lunch are required. Call Laynee Knick at (540) 261-7474.
