Conversation With The Constitution

March 8, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: ME: I am sure that the best candidate for president is me. It will be my platform “to secure the Blessings of Liberty” to myself and my posterity. After all, this is the last line in the preamble to the Constitution of the United States, is it not?

CONSTITUTION; No! Read the whole preamble: “We the people of the United States of America in order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution of the United States of America.”

ME: But that does include me doesn’t it?

CONSTITUTION: Yes! But it also includes many millions of other plain old humans like yourself.

ME: Well, if I get enough votes, and all the others that vote for me, we can have it our way, right?

CONSTITUTION: I hope not! ME: You mean that all these special interest groups who’s votes buy me are meant to secure everyone’s rights?

CONSTITUTION: Yes, that is the hope for our nation. That is why we have a constitution.

ME: Well, that is impossible. CONSTITUTION: I agree with you. We are all self-centered. It is all about me.

ME: Does that mean we don’t have a chance?

CONSTITUTION: That is what it looks like if it’s all about my rights.

ME: Is there any way it can work?

CONSTITUTION: Yes, if you value the rights of others as much as you value your own.

ME: That is impossible. CONSTITUTION: Only if you disregard the Declaration of Independence.

ME: What do you mean? CONSTITUTION: It is only The Creator that endowed us with these rights that can change our hearts and enable us “to love one another as The Creator loves us!’

ME: ?! STEVE CATHCART Lexington
