Seven PM Cagers All-Region

Seven Parry McCluer High School basketball players – four girls and three boys – were awarded all-region honors last week.

For the PM girls, junior guard Victoria Hamilton, the Pioneer District player of the year, was named to the all-region first team after leading the Fighting Blues in scoring, averaging 13.7 points per game. PM girls selected to the all-region second team were senior guards Payton Emore and Addisen Roberts and junior guard Natalie Mohler.

Representing the PM boys, senior guards Landon Catlett and Evan Cook were named to the all-region first team, while senior guard JJ Jones was selected to the all-region second team.

Under the direction of head coach Adam Gilbert, the PM girls went 20-4 this season, going 8-0 in the Pioneer District, claiming their fourth consecutive district regular-season title and overcoming Narrows 55-52 to win their fourth consecutive district tournament title. After a 46-41 win over Bland County in the Region 1C quarterfinals, PM’s season concluded with a 65-34 loss to Fort Chiswell in the Region 1C semifinals.

Guided by head coach Tyler Kerr, the PM boys went 22-5 this season, going 10-1 in the Pioneer District, claiming the first-place game against Narrows, last year’s district champion, before having a rematch with the Green Wave in the district finals and winning 74-61. After a 73-49 win over Galax in the Region 1C quarterfinals, the Blues’ season concluded with a 77-70 loss to George Wythe in the Region 1C semifinals.

Last month, Kerr and Gilbert were named the Pioneer District coaches of the year.
