A multi-vehicle collision blocked traffic on I-81 Sunday at mile marker 179 northbound.
According to Rockbridge County Fire and Rescue Chief Nathan Ramsey seven vehicles were involved in the wreck – a tractor trailer that flipped onto its side, blocking the entire interstate, and six passenger vehicles.
Five people were transported to a hospital, though none were in critical condition.
Sgt. Richard Garletts, with the Virginia State Police, said the crash happened around 4:20 p.m., and that both lanes of the highway were cleared at 7:14 p.m. Traffic was redirected to U.S. 11 while crews worked to clear the highway.
Responding to the accident were the Natural Bridge Fire Department, Glasgow Rescue, Glasgow Fire Department, and Rockbridge Fire and Rescue.
