March 8, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: It seems there’s remarkable similarity between two of God’s creatures we wouldn’t expect — between cockroaches and politicians. Both fear the light and scatter when it’s turned on.
One hundred and ninety-five members of the House of Representatives voted to block access to contraceptives in 2022. Among them was our champion, Ben Cline, who, amazingly, is such a heroic practitioner of abstinence that he has only two children. He, along with the other 194, must be in the running for world record holder in selfdenial. Either that or his vote is proof of prodigious hypocrisy.
Of course, like cockroaches, those seeking the support of the religious un-right in primary races — who themselves, amazingly, have the same average 2.5 children as all Americans — hope to remain out of sight. Now exposed, they will explain how their vote isn’t exactly what it is — shameless meddling in the private lives of fellow citizens for self-interested political advantage.
Mr. Cline regularly emails me to tout his Superman-like defense of truth, justice and the American way, along with his claims that Biden is responsible for everything up to and including Original Sin. Will he brag about this vote?
Will he loudly proclaim embryos are human beings, that those who dispose of them in IVF should be charged with murder, something on the agenda of the more-holy-than-everyoneelse?
Will Mr. Cline’s next appearance be in bedrooms across our area, accompanying the greatly expanded fertility police, ensuring no woman allows an egg to be wasted during menstruation? JOE PETITE Rockbridge County
