March 17, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: Many thanks to Matt Paxton for his tribute to Dr. Edgar Shannon. I missed Matt by a year at the University of Virginia, so I witnessed the tumult of 1970 following the U.S. incursion into Cambodia. Despite a studentled effort to close the university, President Shannon kept the school open and for students like me in the classroom.
But what I will remember most about President Shannon was his great civility. When he walked down The Lawn from Carr’s Hill to Cabell Hall to teach in the English department, he spoke to every student he passed. He had an incredible impact on our lives. Sadly the “speaking tradition” at UVA no longer exists. I hope the students at Washington and Lee will endeavor to retain their tradition. DON HASFURTHER Rockbridge County
