The Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing this Monday, March 25, on a proposal to make changes to the county’s admissions tax.
Earlier this month, following a request from the supervisors, the finance committee returned a recommendation that the current admissions tax of 10 percent, with a $3 cap, be lowered to 6 percent, with no cap.
The supervisors on March 10 unanimously voted to move forward with the recommendation, scheduling a public hearing on the proposal for their next meeting, which takes place this Monday, beginning at 5:30 p.m., in the county administration building, 150 S. Main St. in Lexington.
The tax on admissions to county attractions was imposed at a rate of 3 percent in 2022 with scheduled increases to 6 percent in 2023 and 10 percent in 2024. The amount of the tax is capped at $3 per admission.
The tax, at a rate of 3 percent, generated revenues of $165,566 between Feb. 1 and Dec. 31, 2022. In 2023, the 6 percent tax generated revenues of $391,223 for the calendar year. In January of 2024, the 10 percent tax brought in $14,225.
