Dollar Tree, Creamery Coming To BV Soon

A Dollar Tree and a creamery are among the new businesses with their sights set on Buena Vista.

Kristina Ramsey, the city’s economic development director, delivered this news in a department report to City Council this past Thursday.

A 10,000-square-foot Dollar Tree store is under construction on 29th Street, just west of the railroad underpass, on a site where a gas service station used to be a number of years ago. “Construction is proceeding quickly; it will probably be open later this year,” said Tom Roberts, Buena Vista’s director of community de- velopment, on Tuesday.

This will be the second Dollar Tree store in the Rockbridge area. Another one is located north of Lexington adjacent to Walmart.

The corporate entity that owns Dollar Tree also owns the Family Dollar stores. The company announced recently that 600 Family Dollar stores are closing nationwide. Roberts said he did not know if the Family Dollar store in Buena Vista is among those to be shuttered.

Ramsey also alluded to the owners of the Holy Cow! ice cream shop at Glen Maury Park recently acquiring the Draft Creamery in Stuarts Draft, from which it purchases its ice cream. The creamery is being relocated into the Virginia Innovation Accelerator, a startup business hub that is in the former Mundet Hermetite building in Buena Vista.

Draft Creamery also supplies ice cream to the BeeVe in Buena Vista as well as MayLynn’s in Lynchburg and Bubbleworld in Harrisonburg, among other outlets in the region, according to a Holy Cow! Facebook post.

Other Buena Vista business news reported by Ramsey included the pending opening of Kenney’s & More restaurant in the former Kenney’s building at 1518 Magnolia Ave. next Wednesday, April 3, and the recent opening of Elizabeth Loughhead’s massage therapy business at 2175 Magnolia Ave.
