New Member Worked On Staff Of NY Official
At its regular meeting on March 5, Goshen Town Council voted to appoint Amy Tesich to fill an open seat on Council.
T e s i c h has lived in Goshen since 2012 when she moved from Colorado with the goal of starting a produce farm. She grew up in both New York City and Colorado and, between the two environments, she says she “very much prefer[s] nature and quiet.”
“I love the farm and I love the quiet,” Tesich told The News-Gazette. “My neighbors here are lovely. We help each other out, being so far from town. We really lean on each other, and that’s not something you really get in the city very often. It’s a really nice change of pace and it feels safe and comfortable to know you can really trust the people around you and it’s a real feeling of community, so I really appreciate that.”
Tesich brings to Town Council many years of experience with public service and volunteer work, including a couple of years working on the staff of New York City Councilwoman Gale Brewer, who represents the city’s Sixth District, which includes Hell’s Kitchen, Times Square and Central Park.
“A lot of what I did was listening to our constituents and the genuine problems that they faced, and a lot of times it wasn’t what you might expect,” she said. “I really, really enjoyed the work.”
One of the priorities Tesich has as a member of the Town Council is the construction of the proposed community center.
“I desperately want this community center to go through,” she said. “I think there’s a lot of misinformation about it. People think for some reason that we, the citizens, would have to pay for it, but that’s not the case. It’s all being paid for through grants.
“I want to build something that will make children feel cared for and make our community feel proud and give us more opportunities in this neck of the woods,” she added. “A lot of the money stays in Lexington, but we deserve resources just like everyone else does, so that’s something I really want to fight for.”
Tesich fills a seat left vacant by Joey Sampson, who was appointed last June to fill the seat held by Debbie Bowden following her resignation in May. The seat is one that is up for election in this year’s general election.
Tesich told The News-Gazette that she has not decided if she will run for a full term in November because she wants “to make sure that this is a good fit” and that it will work with her family’s schedule.
