Kendal at Lexington will host an event featuring Kip Armstrong, son of renowned author William Armstrong, on Thursday, April 4, at Kendal Hall, starting at 4 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public. Following the presentation, there will be a wine reception co-sponsored by C&E and the Kendal marketing team.
Kip Armstrong will provide insights into the background of his father’s early life in Rockbridge County, which inspired him to pen the beloved book “Sounder” and several other literary works.
William Armstrong formed a deep connection with Charlie Jones, who was employed on his grandfather’s farm and served as a Black educator at the Cedar Creek School in Collierstown.
Jones’ influence on the youth of the county will be highlighted during the event, with Kip Armstrong sharing anecdotes and showcasing slides of the actual locations mentioned in the book. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from individuals who knew Charlie Jones and can share their personal recollections.
“Sounder,” which won The Newberry Award for Contribution to Children’s Literature in 1970, has captivated audiences worldwide and has been adapted into two film versions.
