My mother is in Heaven, with many of family members waiting for me. But when Mama was with me she was my doctor when I got sick, she was my teacher when I needed help with my homework and everyone knew she was the boss of the kitchen, and she was my lawyer when she needed to defend me.
But most of all she was my prayer warrior. She taught me about Jesus when I would come to her about the boogeyman under my bed. She told me to put my faith and trust in Him and not to be afraid. I hope that everyone had and have a Mama like I did, but sadly when I read some of the letters to the editor, people are scared – they’re scared of names like Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, Christian men that helped to build this town.
Stonewall Jackson used his money to start a school for Black children to learn the Holy Bible. Robert E. Lee after the war did his best to bring the country back together and built a chapel at Washington and Lee University for all people to worship the Lord but sadly some people in this town and surrounding area, they’re afraid of the boogeyman. So they have to take down statues and take names off buildings, cemeteries, street signs, flags and roads. If my Mama was here, she would tell you, don’t be afraid; Jesus is in charge.
