March 25, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: I was extremely disappointed to learn that Carilion Clinic has decided to shutter Lexington’s only allergy/immunology clinic, run by Dr. Gates Hoover, at the end of April.
This dedicated specialist doctor and his staff have been driving up every week for decades to see up to 50 patients per week. Carilion has an avowed commitment to rural access - for which they have received federal funding in the past - but in this case, has decided that it is acceptable to shutter the only allergy clinic between Roanoke and Waynesboro.
Patients will now have to either receive their allergy shots and other essential medications at the hands of our already full local family practices or drive two hours each week; inevitably, some patients will simply not be able to access this vital care at all.
