Rockbridge County Girls Lax Splits Pair

The Rockbridge County High School girls lacrosse team split a pair of road games last week, falling to Western Albemarle before rebounding to roll past E.C. Glass.

On Tuesday of last week, the Warriors scored a 15-7 win over the Wildcats, who ended the week at 2-1. Western, which would improve to 3-0 with a 13-9 win over James Madison later in the week, is the only team that has beaten RC in the last four years – including three straight victories over the ’Cats in the Class 4 state semifinals. The Warriors went on to capture the state championship last spring.

Lola Mulitalo was a bright spot for RC in Tuesday’s game, netting five of the Wildcats’ seven markers.

“Western had a difficult time stopping her on defense around the crease,” RC head coach Susan Nye said of her sophomore star.

The ’Cats also won the draw circle battle 12-10, getting four draw controls from Anna Nye and three apiece from Maddie Dahl and Halina Homiak. Nye and Libba Erskine each scored one goal, and Emily Humphreys made eight saves.

Playing another elite opponent so early in the season should only help the Wildcats in the long run.

“Western had an aggressive ride, and we lost key possessions between the 30s [30-yard lines] on our transitions,” Nye said. “Being that it is March, we will be able to work on this flaw.”

RC 22, E.C. Glass 6

RC bounced back in emphatic fashion with a resounding 22-6 victory over E.C. Glass in Lynchburg on Thursday. Mulitalo racked up 10 points, totaling four goals and six assists, to pace the Wildcats’ attack. Ruby Goodhart also tallied four goals, while Dahl, Erskine and Nye each bagged a hat trick, and Nala Shearer recorded four assists. All told, nine different Wildcats scored in the game.

RC also held an 18-10 advantage in draw controls, led by seven from Nye and five from Dahl. On the defensive side, 11 Wildcats recorded at least one ground ball and seven different players caused turnovers, while Humphreys and Alyssa Hunter made two saves apiece against the Hilltoppers (2-1).

After spring break next week, RC will return to action on Monday, April 8, with a 5:30 p.m. varsity contest at Salem. The Wildcats will then play host to Blacksburg on Wednesday, April 10, starting with junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m., with the varsity game scheduled to follow at 7:15.
