Falling behind early, the Rockbridge County High School softball team suffered a 6-3 road loss to Alleghany (2-2) on Monday of last week in Covington.

The Cougars’ first two runs came on an RC error in the second inning. In the third, Alleghany’s Paige Webb doubled on a fly ball to left field to bring home three more runs. Alleghany’s final run came on an RC error in the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Wildcats (1-2) scored their first run when Sadie Moore hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Parker Dameron. Page Wright then scored on a passed ball to cut the Cougars’ lead to 6-2. RC scored its final run in the seventh when Lilly Thomas singled on a grounder to right field to bring home Landrey Campbell, but the game ended when the Wildcats grounded out for the final two outs.

Alleghany recorded nine hits, while the Wildcats had six. Webb led the Cougars with two hits, while seven different players each had one hit for Alleghany.

Campbell and Dameron each recorded two hits to lead RC, while Thomas and Wright each had one hit.

On the mound for Alleghany, Tyra Rose pitched a complete game, striking out seven and allowing six hits, three walks and three runs (two earned).

For RC, Moore pitched a complete game, striking out nine and surrendering nine hits, one walk and six runs (five earned).

“Sadie continues to pitch great games for us and is producing 100 percent effort on the mound,” said RC head coach Keston Pelter.

The Wildcats committed two errors, while Alleghany had none.

RC was scheduled to play host to Staunton on Saturday, but that game was postponed due to rain and has been rescheduled for Thursday, May 2, at 5 p.m.

The Wildcats were slated to play host to Fort Defiance on Monday and will have a rematch with Alleghany at RC on Thursday at 5 p.m. before making the short trip to Buena Vista to take on local rival Parry McCluer on Monday at 7 p.m.. RC will start Valley District action at Harrisonburg on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Moving forward, Pelter said, “The girls have to continue to come out strong and confident at the plate from the beginning. They have to swing their bat a little more and put the ball in play so we can get on base. I am hopeful that, with basically a week’s worth of practice this last week, that they’ve made adjustments with the hitting drills we’ve done and we will be more assertive at the plate this week.”
