Students from Lylburn Downing Middle School won multiple awards in the District 4 Virginia History Day competition at Mary Baldwin University on March 9.
Over the previous months, they had researched and created websites, documentaries and exhibits on topics of their choice.
Sixth-graders Alex Eastwood and Foster Pickett placed first with their group documentary on the “Discovery of Zero.”
Eighth-graders Liesl Neibur and Sarah Edgar placed first with their group website “Sister Rat: Virginia Military Institute and the Admission of Women; The Battle for Equality in a Military Education.”
Ru Bucy, Emil Hierman, and Joe Vargas placed second with their website “The Fight for Flights: How the North Atlantic Route Case Changed Commercial Aviation Forever.”
Eighth-grader Luke Eichholz won first place with his individual website, “Manet and the Post Impressionist Exhibition: A Turning Point in Art History.”
Seventh-grader Jude Eichholz won second place with his website on “The Invention of the Polymerase Chain Reaction,” and eighth-grader Graham Shester won third place with his documentary on “Milk Pasteurization.”
These projects will advance to the state competition in Richmond in April.
