The Buena Vista School Board voted to approve a 2024-2025 budget at its March meeting.
The budget approved last week totals $14.7 million, with $2.7 million requested from the city, an increase of $400,000 from last year’s local funding total of $2.3 million.
As discussed at an earlier budget work session, the School Board’s priories in the 2024-2025 budget are raises for division staff and teachers, as well as accounting for the loss of funding through the American Rescue Plan and rising insurance costs.
A 3% raise is planned for division staff and provided for in the General Assembly’s budget proposal.
However, the approved budget proposal provides teachers a 5% raise and a revised paraprofessional pay scale.
Multiple positions previously funded through the American Rescue Plan’s Elementary and Secondary Schools Emergency Relief arm will now be supported locally, and the division is also budgeting for a significant increase in the cost of health insurance.
The School Board’s budget has been submitted to Buena Vista City Council, though it is still subject to revision pending a finalized state budget.
