Blues Earn 6-3 Road Win Over Narrows
The Parry McCluer High School girls tennis team earned a 6-3 road win in its Pioneer District opener last Wednesday at Narrows.
For the Fighting Blues (2-1), who were coming back from spring break, it was their first match in 12 days and their second consecutive win. In the first week of the season, the Blues lost at Rockbridge County 5-4 on March 12 before earning a 6-3 road win over Mountain View three days later. Last year, the Blues swept the season series with Narrows by winning 5-4 both times.
Last Wednesday, the Blues won four of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches against the Green Wave (1-4).
PM head coach Alyssa Sewell called the victory over Narrows “such a great win!”
In particular, she praised her top two players, senior Addisen Roberts and junior Macy Shafer. Both players cruised to 8-3 wins in singles, Roberts at the top spot and Shafer at No. 2, and they teamed up to capture an 8-2 victory in doubles.
“I am extremely proud of how calm and collected Addisen and Macy played,” said Sewell. “They are really starting to have some great team chemistry.
Sewell added that PM freshman Keely Mahaffey had a strong match at No. 5 singles, coasting to an 8-0 win.
Reviewing her team’s performance overall, Sewell said she was “overall very happy, but we still have a lot to work on as the season progresses.”
Today, Wednesday, the Blues are scheduled to play at Alleghany at 4:30 p.m. They’ll have their first home match on Tuesday when they face district rival Bath County at 5 p.m. at the Southern University courts. When the two teams last met last May in the Pioneer District championship match, Bath won 5-4.
