A new shopping mall was planned for Lexington on East Nelson Street on property owned by George Macheras. The center would contain seven or eight specialty shops that would take up most of the space, but there would be additional space for professional offices. - Lexington Mayor Charles F. Phillips Jr. joined with Gov. Mills. E. Godwin in proclaiming April 8-20 as official cleanup days for Lexington and the state. - The decline in interest among college students in introductory history courses was the topic of discussion at a special seminar at the George C. Marshall Foundation. One participant theorized, “We are living in an ahistorical period. People have come to think that things are different now, so different that they having nothing to learn from the past.”

The Bontex water tower in Buena Vista, which had stood for 80 years, was torn down. It was no longer necessary since the plant had been hooked up to the city’s water system for some time. - All three county elementary schools were slated for significant updates, including new media centers and computer labs as well as upgraded heating, ventilation and air conditioning.
