Wildcats Come Back From Eight-Run Deficit To Win Baseball Thriller, 12-11

In a thrilling come-from-behind victory, the Rockbridge County High school baseball team earned a 12-11 win over Alleghany, capped by a walk-off two-run single by freshman Rocky Perlozzo.

With the nondistrict win, the Wildcats (2-5) avenged a 15-1 road loss to the Cougars (5-3) on March 18.

In the rematch, RC trailed 8-0 in the fifth inning. Alleghany pitcher Trevor Jackson was solid through the first four until the Wildcats chased him in the fifth after stringing together a couple of hits.

A two-run single by RC’s Thomas Armstrong was the nail in the coffin for Jackson’s night, as he exited the game with an 8-4 lead.

Zac Majors entered the ballgame in relief in the fifth for the Wildcats and was able to keep the Wildcats in striking distance, as their bats continued to chip away.

RC scored three runs in the sixth inning, but Alleghany also scored three.

Trailing 11-7 in the bottom of the seventh the Wildcats put together a rally for the ages, scoring five straight runs without recording an out. Perlozzo was 2-of-3 on the night, had three RBIs, scored a run. Also recording two hits each for the Wildcats were Majors and Clay Irvine.

Majors was the winning pitcher. In 3.1 innings in relief, he struck out one and surrendered five hits, two walks and three earned runs.

The Wildcats overcame four errors, while Alleghany had one.

RC and Alleghany each racked up 12 hits. Hunter DePriest led Alleghany with three hits, while Christopher Harden, Brady May and Graham Brewster each added two hits.

The Wildcats will return to Valley District action when they play at Turner Ashby on Friday at 6 p.m.
