Plenty Of Seats On Fall Ballots

Although this is a presidential election year, there will be more on the ballots in the Rockbridge area this Nov. 5 than elections for president, a Virginia U.S. senator and the state’s Sixth District member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The first ever Lexington School Board elections will be held. Lexington voters will be choosing three members of the School Board, three members of City Council and a mayor.

Glasgow voters will be electing three members of Town Council and Goshen voters will be electing two members of their town council. In Buena Vista, a special election will be held for one member of City Council.

The filing deadline for all of the regular local elections is June 18, which also happens to be the day a Republican primary will be held to determine the Republican nominee to challenge incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, who is running for reelection. Five candidates who are vying to be the GOP U.S. Senate nominee are Hung Cao, Edward C. “Eddie” Garcia Jr., Jonathan W. Emord, C. L. “Chuck” Smith Jr. and Scott Thomas Parkinson.

Lexington School Board members whose seats will be up for election this year are Tammy Dunn, Sandra Hayslette and Brendan Perry. At last week’s School Board meeting, Dunn said she would be a candidate for reelection while Hayslette said she would not.

Other Lexington incumbents whose seats will also be up for election this year are City Council members Marilyn Alexander, Leslie Straughan and Charles Aligood and Mayor Frank Friedman.

Goshen Town Council members whose seats will be up for election this year are Steve Bickley and Amy Tesich. Bickley is nearing the end of a four-year term while Tesich was appointed earlier this year to fill a seat vacated by Joey Sampson.

Glasgow Town Council members whose seats are up for election this year are Natalie Harris, Marcie Hill and Brandal Branch. All three were elected to two-year terms in 2022 – Branch as a write-in candidate.

In Buena Vista, there will be a special election to fill the City Council seat now held by Todd Jones, who was chosen earlier this year to fill the seat that had been vacated by Tyson Cooper, who was elected mayor. Jones has said he will not be a candidate in the special election. Prospective candidates for this special election have until Aug. 23 to file their candidacies.
