April 10, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: I hope everyone is paying attention to the “Affordable Housing Project.”
The developer wants a 50% abatement on the property taxes for the first 15 years. Only 12 of the 62 units will be at a lower rent. Well, how does this sound?
So, the developer really can’t afford it and wants the taxpayers to help fund this project. The developer will make money, likely will bring in outside labor to build it, will likely cause the tax base rate increase in the area, you will foot the bill and they will skip town. Politicians like to use the term “affordable housing” but we all know that it is still not affordable for most and the project is to have a reduced rent for only about 20 percent of the tenants.
Great job to our representatives. They are really looking out for the community. I suggest they take the potential abatement money and give it as housing assistance to those that need a helping hand. There is no shortage of housing in the area. I see plenty of houses that have been on the market for months now. There are plenty of houses in the area that need a little work that would make fine starter homes.
We need to help those that want to put back into the community and not to out-of-town developers that have no desire to maintaining the community of Lexington. Don’t let Lexington be chipped away. ED ADELSTEIN Rockbridge County
