RC Netmen Go 1-2 For Week

In a busy week of action, the Rockbridge County High School boys tennis team earned an 8-1 home win over Lord Botetourt last Wednesday, but the Wildcats lost to Valley District rivals Spotswood and Turner Ashby.

With the nondistrict win over LB (0-6), the Wildcats (4-2 overall, 1-2 district) completed a sweep of the season series. When the teams met on March 20 at LB, RC won 6-3. In the rematch, the Wildcats won all three of their doubles matches and five of their six singles contests.

In their first home match of the season on Tuesday of last week, the Wildcats suffered a 7-0 loss to Spotswood (5-2, 3-0) at the Lexington Country Club courts, with three of the singles matches suspended due to rain. RC head coach Scott Youngdahl said the Trailblazers are “very deep and talented.”

On Friday, the Wildcats came up short 5-4 at Turner Ashby (8-1, 4-0). After winning just two of the six singles matches, Nic Vargas at No. 1 and Jaxon Johnson at No. 4, the Wildcats needed a sweep of doubles to beat the Knights. “We almost pulled it off,” said Youngdahl. “We need to be more clinical with our shots.”

The Wildcats were scheduled to play host to Alleghany yesterday and will have two district home matches coming up, against East Rockingham today, Wednesday, and against Broadway on Friday. They’ll continue district action on Tuesday at East Rockingham. All three matches are scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
