Houck Hurls No-Hitter Against Bath

Blues Defeat Bath, Grace Christian

The Parry McCluer High School baseball team won a pair of home games last week, defeating Grace Christian 5-3 last Monday before cruising to a 10-0 win in five innings over Bath County last Tuesday.

In the nondistrict game against Grace Christian, the Fighting Blues (5-2 overall, 3-0 district) dealt the Warriors (7-1) their first loss of the season.

After GC scored on a PM error in the top of the first, the Blues scored three runs in the bottom of the first. Aaron Pruett singled on a grounder to third base to bring home Tyler Wade, and Pruett and Tanner Coleman scored on a GC error to give PM a 3-1 lead.

The Warriors scored on a PM error in the top of the fourth to cut it to 3-2, but the Blues responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Braedyn Houck scored on a fielder’s choice after Wade hit the ball to the GC shortstop, and Coleman singled on a line drive to left field to bring home Curtis King, extending PM’s lead to 5-2.

GC scored the final run of the game on a PM error in the fifth.

The Blues recorded six hits, while the Warriors had three. Six different Blues each had one hit: Coleman, Pruett, Houck, Jase Barger, Jordan Brockenbrough and Brayden Holdren.

Peyton Ramsey pitched the first 3.1 innings for PM, striking out six and allowing three hits, one walk and two unearned runs. In 3.2 innings of relief, Coleman struck out seven and surrendered no hits, one walk and one unearned run.

Houck threw a no-hitter while striking out 11 and allowing just two walks to lead the Blues to a 10-0 home win in five innings over Pioneer District rival Bath County (1-2, 0-1) on Tuesday of last week.

The Blues’ batters were on target as well, racking up 11 hits, led by Wade, Coleman and Ramsey with two hits each.

PM took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Pruett singled on a line drive to left field to bring home Barger. The Blues added two more runs on singles by Holdren and Ramsey.

In the second, Coleman and Barger scored on a Bath error to extend PM’s lead to 5-0. It was the only error of the game.

The Blues added three more runs in the third to make it 8-0, one a single by Wade and two on a single by Coleman. PM added another run in the fourth when Ramsey singled on a line drive to left field to bring home Holdren.

PM sealed the win in the fifth when Coleman scored on a passed ball to end the game early due to the 10-run mercy rule.

The Blues were scheduled to play host to Craig County on Thursday, but that game was postponed due to rain and was rescheduled for Thursday, May 2.

PM was slated to play host to Altavista on Monday and will play at Craig County today, Wednesday, before continuing district action at home against Narrows on Thursday. The Blues will then have a rematch at Altavista on Monday before playing host to Eastern Montgomery on Tuesday. All games are scheduled for 5 p.m.
