Members of the local Blue Ridge Garden Club will be assisting with the Historic Garden Week tour in Staunton this Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The tour features cottages and stately Colonial Revivals on Ridgeview Road, which provide a picturesque snapshot of Staunton’s early 20th-century residential development.
Tour-goers can step inside four homes designed by Staunton architect Samuel Collins of the T.J. Collins and Son firm and see his inspired use of classical details complimented by the owners’ creative updates. The gardens, one of which was designed by renowned landscape architect Charles Gillette, are graced with white picket fences, boxwood hedges, flowering borders, and landscaped patios. Tour talks feature the neighborhood’s history, one owner’s National Register listing journey, and the skilled work of Sam Collins.
Advance tickets, at $30 each, available online at VAGarden-Week.org. Day-of-tour tickets at $40 will be available at the Garden Tour headquarters at 41 Ridgeview Road. Parking for the tour shuttle is available at Staunton High School, 1301 N. Coalter St.
Proceeds from this tour and all of the Garden Week tours taking place across Virginia this week fund the Garden Club of Virginia’s restoration of historic public gardens and landscapes and a research fellowship program.
The Blue Ridge Garden Club conducts tours in the Rockbridge area every other year. The next tour will be in April 2025.
