April 19, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: An issue has arisen on Irish Creek Road in northern Rockbridge County concerning a proposed special rezoning exemption permit for a large event venue to be built about 4 miles up from the intersection with South River Road.
The residents of Irish Creek and many fishermen, hunters, cyclists and hikers oppose this project.
There will be a 7,200-squarefoot building, large parking areas, a large septic system, lighting and amplified music, 50 events per year, 175 guests per event and alcohol will be served.
Irish Creek Road is narrow, unlined with no signal, with no signage whatever warning about the many sharp, blind curves. A new bridge will have to be built across the creek to access this property, because the existing bridge does not meet VDOT standards. No mention has been made of a water supply for this huge operation, stated to be 365 days a year. Presumably it will have to be pumped from the ground water and the aquifer underground. One concern is that our wells will go dry.
This is a mountain valley with surrounding high mountains shaped like a bowl. Noise will be a major problem, as will light pollution of our dark night skies. Much of this project is in the 100year flood zone with all those attendant dangers. Property vales will be degraded for our homes. Who wants to buy a home with this huge venue basically in your front yard?
This project will adversely affect all residents and the many who have fished, hunted, etc. for generations in this area. The construction phase alone will require many months of disruption and environmental damage.
Irish Creek is not zoned to allow this currently and if passed, it would only open the door for further commercialization and the permanent despoiling of an unspoiled treasure that people come from all over to enjoy. We urge all Rockbridge County residents to contact their supervisor to express their opposition and to attend the May 13 supervisors meeting at 5:30 p.m. at 150 S Main St., Lexington.
