Jones Scores Four Goals To Lead Wildcats To 6-1 Victory
Madelyn Jones scored four goals to lead the Rockbridge County High School girls soccer team to its first win of the season, a 6-1 Valley District road victory over Broadway on Friday.
The Wildcats (1-4-0 overall, 1-2-0 district), bouncing back from a 4-0 home loss to William Monroe on Tuesday of last week, swept Broadway last year. The win on Friday was the first under new head coach Danny Wheeler.
While Jones, a junior who plays at the midfielder and forward positions, provided most of the offense for the Wildcats, Sophie Vaught and Emily Jones each scored one goal for RC. Vaught dished out two assists, and Lydia Kendall had one assist.
In goal, RC senior Sophia Perlozzo made six saves against the Gobblers (2-6-1, 1-4-0).
Reviewing the win, Wheeler said the Wildcats finally found “the blueprint for the needed transition for movement of the ball through the center of the field to create successful runs.”
“The team is committed to building on this plan and willing to explore and execute the possibilities,” added Wheeler. “Continuous communication on and off the field is key to our development and success.”
