PM Softball Takes District Pair, Suffers First Loss
The Parry McCluer High School softball team won two of three games last week, falling at home against Altavista 13-8 last Monday before bouncing back with two dominant Pioneer District wins, 21-5 last Wednesday at Craig County and 17-6 at home against Narrows on Thursday.
Against Craig County, the Fighting Blues (7-1 overall, 4-0 district) jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first inning and added three runs in the second and four in the third, getting a three-run homer from Autumn Mundy to go up 10-1. The Blues extended their lead to double digits in the fourth, 13-2, and stayed comfortably ahead to end the game in five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Mundy led the Blues with four hits and six RBIs, while Payton Emore added three hits and two RBIs. Recording three hits each for PM were Logan Vest, Victoria Hamilton and Gracey Shafer.
PM 17, Narrows 6
The Blues cruised to a 17-6 home win over Narrows on Thursday in Buena Vista.
PM, which had beaten the Green Wave 34-7 on March 27 at Narrows, got going quickly in the rematch, taking a 9-0 lead in the first inning.
After the Blues scored another run in the second, Narrows responded with three runs in the third to cut the lead to 10-3. PM then added four runs in the fourth to extend its lead to 14-3.
Narrows scored three runs in the fifth to cut PM’s lead to 14-6.
PM’s Remi Hickman hit a triple in the fifth to bring home three runs and end the game in five innings.
Vest and Emore led PM with three hits each, with Vest recording four RBIs and Emore bringing in three runs.
Altavista 13, PM 8
PM suffered its first loss of the season with a 13-8 home setback against Altavista in nondistrict action on Monday of last week.
The Blues took a 3-0 lead in the first innings, scoring one run on a single by Munday and two on a single by Olivia Julian.
Altavista responded by scoring five runs in the top of the second, on a double, a triple and an error. The Colonels led 7-5 after the four innings and extended their lead to 11-6 in the fifth.
Each team scored two runs in the sixth, as the Colonels held on for the win.
The Blues were scheduled to have a rematch at Altavista on Monday before playing host to district rival Eastern Montgomery yesterday. They’ll play Buffalo Gap twice, in Swoope on Friday and next Wednesday, May 1, in Buena Vista, with both games starting at 5:30 p.m.
