Jones First In Three

RC Girls Place Second In Quad Track Meet

Rockbridge County High School freshman Celia Jones won three individual events to lead the RC girls track and field team to second place of four Valley District teams on Thursday at Spotswood, while the RC boys finished third.

The RC girls scored 59 points, trailing only Spotswood’s 95, while Harrisonburg (25) placed third, and Turner Ashby (6) finished fourth. Spotswood (114) also won the boys’ meet, Harrisonburg (77) placed second, and RC (11) and TA (6) completed the standings.

Jones won the girls’ 100meter dash in 13.33 seconds, qualifying by time for the Region 3C meet. She also claimed the 100-meter hurdles in 19.01 seconds and won the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 4.5 inches. Jones tied teammates Emily Carroll and Abigail Harding for second in the high jump, clearing 3-10. They only trailed Spotswood’s Kate Reubke, who won by clearing 4 feet.

Carroll placed third in both the 100-meter hurdles (21.29 seconds) and the 300-meter hurdles (59.62), and fourth in the long jump, leaping 12-2. Harding placed third in the 100-meter dash (14.53), finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (21.29), and came in third in the long jump (12-5).

Another RC sprinter stepping up was Evelyn McClung, placing fourth in the 100-meter dash (14.83) and fifth in the 200-meter dash (31.93).

Leading the RC girls in distance running was Alice Greshman, placing second in the 1600-meter run (7:55.18) and finishing sixth in the 800meter run (3:42.36).

The RC girls placed third in the 4 X 100-meter relay, finishing in 58.29 seconds. Team members were Carroll, Harding, Jones and McClung.

Leading the RC girls’ throwers was Sydney Knick, placing third in the shot put with a personal-record (PR) toss of 23-7.75 and finishing seventh in discus with a heave of 55-7. Teammate Cate Skaggs placed fourth in the discus (61-5) and came in fifth in the shot put (20-11.5). Also stepping up was Valen Drake, placing 12th in the discus (47-0), while Loyda Little came in 12th in the shot put (14-9).

For the RC boys, Konner Orebaugh placed third in the 200-meter dash in 24.14 seconds and fourth in the 100meter dash in 11.95 seconds, just over a half-second shy of the state-qualifying time of 11.4.

Will Gibbs placed fourth in the 1600-meter run in 5:18.54, a PR, and sixth in the 800-meter run in 2:27.35.

The RC boys placed second in the 4 X 100-meter relay in 54.1 seconds, trailing only Spotswood’s winning time of 46.14. RC team members were Gibbs, Orebaugh, Jakob Bailey and Abdus-Salam Lasisi.

Bailey placed 13th in the long jump with a PR leap of 156.5, while Lasisi finished 16th, jumping 11-9.75.

RC head coach Jennifer Showalter said the meet went well. “Everyone is showing improvements with each meet in both running events and field events,” she said.

The Wildcats will return to action when they face district rivals at Turner Ashby next Wednesday, May 1.
