Marking Cemeteries

Marking Cemeteries

At the second and third dedications of new historical signage in Lexington last Thursday, Lexington Mayor Frank Friedman and City Manager Jim Halasz (above) unveil the historical marker for the city’s original African American cemetery. The marker, which commemorates the history of the cemetery located at the corner of Washington and Lewis streets, was moved from the U.S. 11 Bypass, updated and relocated to Evergreen Place. BELOW, Dee Joyce-Hayes, Don Hasfurther, Margaret Samdahl and Linda Presley-Beauford, all with the Historic Lexington Foundation, and Larry Spurgeon with the Rockbridge Historic Society, cut the ribbon for the new “Panel of Notable Leaders” at Evergreen Cemetery.
