Thursday, Feb. 2 -- The Parry McCluer High School girls basketball team secured at least a share of the Pioneer District regular-season title with a 59-12 win over Covington in Buena Vista.
Anna Claytor celebrated her Senior Night with 21 points and 11 rebounds as the Fighting Blues closed out their district slate with a 7-1 record and improved to 16-2 overall. Payton Emore notched 12 points for PM, while Victoria Hamilton tallied eight points. The Blues scored the first 14 points of the game, going on to lead 18-2 by the end of the first quarter and 36-8 at halftime.
Lauren Bragg led the Cougars (2-17, 2-4) with six points and grabbed six rebounds, and Taylor Stayton tied for the game-high with 11 boards.
If Eastern Montgomery defeats Covington on Friday, the Mustangs will finish in a first-place tie with PM in the Pioneer standings. That would set up a one-game playoff to determine the district title, which is slated to take place at James River High School at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 13.
In the meantime, the Blues will step out of district play when they travel to Giles this Monday, Feb. 6.
