Orthopedic surgeon Barton Dick opened his office in Lexington on the second floor of the Woody Building at 1 E. Preston Street in Lexington.

- The first room rate increase in three years went into effect at Stonewall Jackson Hospital. The new rate for private rooms was set at $48, while semi-private rooms set a patient back $38.

- Mrs. Edna Pickral, wife of Virginia Military Institute chemistry professor George M. Pickral, was named executive secretary of the United

Fund.

The number of tourists signing the book at the Lexington Visitor Center fell by 6 percent from 2002. At the Buena Vista Visitor Center the decline was 4 percent. - Members of the Rockbridge Food Cooperative, which operated the Healthy Foods Market on Washington Street, voted to file Chapter 7 bankruptcy. The member-owned store had been suffering from declining sales in the past several years. - The sheriff’s office was investigating the theft of a bottle of Percocet and $25 in cash from a locked vehicle in Goshen.
