Friday, Feb. 3 – In its final home game of the season, the Rockbridge County High School girls basketball team suffered a 55-24 loss to Valley District rival Turner Ashby on Friday night in Lexington.
It was the eighth consecutive loss for the Wildcats (2-19 overall, 0-7 district), who had trouble stopping TA’s 6-foot-5-inch forward, Raevin Washington.
Washington led all players with 18 points, scoring 15 points in the first half, and did a good job of finding open teammates for baskets.
TA (17-4, 6-1) jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but the Wildcats responded with a 7-0 run to go up 7-5. With Washington scoring inside, the Knights ended the first quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 13-7 lead.
Forcing turnovers and making shots, TA extended its lead to 27-13 by halftime.
In the third quarter, RC’s Emma Clark hit a pair of 3-pointers, but those were the only points for the Wildcats in the period, as TA took a 44-19 lead into the fourth quarter. Clark made one more 3-pointer in the fourth quarter and led RC with nine points in the game, but the Wildcats never threatened a comeback.
Other than Clark, RC’s leading scorers were Lola Mulitalo with eight points and Maddie Dahl with five.
In addition to Washington, Elizabeth Smith stepped up for the Knights with eight points, while Brynne Gerber added seven points and Maisy Miller chipped in six.
Before the game, the Wildcats honored their two seniors, sisters McKenzie and Rachel Hines. Both guards played well defensively, with Rachel scoring two points before she injured her shoulder late in the game.
The Wildcats will conclude the season when they play at Broadway on Tuesday, starting with junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m.
