Parry McCluer Girls Net Streak At Seven

Parry McCluer Girls Net Streak At Seven

The Parry McCluer High School girls tennis team earned a pair of nondistrict home wins last week, while the Rockbridge County girls suffered a pair of Valley District losses before overcoming Staunton on Thursday for a nondistrict road win.

The Fighting Blues (7-1) cruised to an 8-1 win over Bland County last Wednesday before earning their seventh consecutive win with a 5-4 victory over Mountain View at the Southern Virginia University courts.

Against Bland, PM won five of six singles matches and all three doubles contests. “Great match,” said PM head coach Alyssa Sewell. “Great win!”

With the win over Mountain View, the Blues completed a sweep of the regular-season series. When the teams met on March 15 in Quicksburg, PM won 5-3.

In the rematch, MV won four of six singles matches, but PM won all three doubles contests to eke out the victory.

The Wildcats (3-7 overall, 0-7 district) lost 9-0 to both Valley District rivals, falling to East Rockingham (6-6, 3-5) on Tuesday of last week before losing to Harrisonburg (6-1, 4-1), with both matches at the Lexington Golf & Country Club courts.

Against ER, the Wildcats were missing their top seed, Corinna Allen, so each player had to move up a spot. “Nevertheless, I was happy with the way we played,” said RC head coach Mark Sholes.

Facing Harrisonburg, the Wildcats sent a lot of games to deuce before losing. “I definitely saw improvement in hitting from the previous match,” said Sholes.

With the win at Staunton, the Wildcats completed a sweep of the regular-season series. When the teams met on March 14 in Lexington, RC won 7-2.

In the rematch, the Wildcats got key doubles wins at No. 2 from Sydney Remington and Katherine Lotts and at No. 3 from Eleanor Goodhart and Addie Wright.

The Blues were scheduled to play at Bath County yesterday and will play host to RC on Thursday at 5 p.m. the SVU courts. They’ll play host to Alleghany on Monday at 4:30 p.m. before concluding the regular season with a home match against Bath on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Today, Wednesday, the Wildcats will play host to district rival Spotswood at 4:30 p.m. After taking on PM on Thursday, they’ll play at Turner Ashby on Tuesday before concluding the regular season at Harrisonburg next Wednesday, May 8, with both matches starting at 4:30 p.m.
