’Cats Take 2 Of 3 In Valley

’Cats Take 2 Of 3 In Valley

The Rockbridge County High School boys tennis team won two of three Valley District matches last week, earning a 7-2 road win over East Rockingham last Tuesday before splitting a pair of contests with Harrisonburg.

Against East Rockingham (7-7 overall, 1-7 district), the Wildcats (8-4, 5-3) won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches to sweep the regular-season series. When the teams met on April 17 in Lexington, RC won 5-4.

The Wildcats came up short 6-3 last Wednesday at Harrisonburg (5-3, 4-3), but then bounced back with a 5-4 home win on Friday at the Lexington Country Club courts.

Friday’s contest came down to the No. 5 singles match, with RC’s Harrison Tanner battling for a 9-8 (7-4 tiebreak) win over Lleyton Steines.

“Harrison attacked, sometimes recklessly, but he was rewarded for being aggressive,” said RC head coach Scott Youngdahl. He said Tanner “played his heart out to get us the win.”

Earlier, Tanner teamed up with Barrett Kosmas to earn a 9-7 win at No. 3 doubles, and RC’s Gardner Clement and Jaxon Johnson captured an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles.

“We finally came through in doubles,” said Youngdahl. Great to see Jaxon and Gardner pull out a tight one against Harrisonburg.”

The Wildcats were scheduled to play at Alleghany yesterday and will return to district action at Spotswood on Friday. RC concludes the regular season with two home matches, taking on district rival Turner Ashby on Tuesday before facing nondistrict foe Staunton next Wednesday, May 8. All matches are set for 4:30 p.m.
