Stamp Out

Hunger Food Drive May 11

The Rockbridge Area Relief Association will participate in the 32nd annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday, May 11. The food drive is the largest in the nation and is held in partnership with members of the National Association of Letter Carriers, the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, and the U.S. Postal Service.

, page B6 Postal workers from offices throughout Rockbridge County will collect donated canned and dry food items from local residents and deliver them to RARA, as well as food pantries in Buena Vista and Glasgow. Last year’s drive brought in almost 3,900 pounds of nonperishable food to RARA. They hope to collect even more donations this year as visits to the Neighborhood Grocery have sharply increased since 2023.

To participate, residents can leave their nonperishable food donations in a bag next to their mailbox before their typical mail delivery. All donations are greatly appreciated, but items such as marinades and sauces, canned meat, soup, canned fruit, and health and hygiene products are in high demand right now. RARA asks that residents please avoid donating glass items, though.

The donations will be processed by a team of volunteers at RARA on May 11. Volunteer spots are full for the event, but additional help is needed to sort items in the following weeks. Contact (540) 463-6943 or volunteer@ raralex.org to sign up.
