Students Compete In Regional Chess Tourney

On Saturday, April 20, seven players from Waddell Elementary School and two players from Lylburn Downing Middle School participated in the last regional tournament of the school year in Roanoke.

The players from Waddell finished in third place as a team, with two players winning trophies by finishing in the top 10 in the individual competition, Rayyan Maktoomi who finished in seventh place and Jhossel Soriano Caceres who finished in ninth. Two players barely missed the top 10. Vivienne King finished in 12th place and Harry Loughhead finished in 13th.

The two players from Lylburn Downing, Gibson Fox and Alex Eastwood, finished in second place as a team, missing first place by only half a point. To put the Lylburn Downing team result into perspective, team scores are determined by adding the scores of the top four finishers from a school. Gibson and Alex nearly matched the score of a team with four or more players. Their individual finishes were equally impressive – Gibson finished in third place, and Alex finished in second.
