John Paul Woodley Jr. of Lexington, candidate for City Council, was charged with violating the city’s posting ordinance after he was found placing posters and handbills on utility poles. -A change in federal minimum wage regulations went into effect. Employers were required to pay their employees $1.90 per hour. - About 100 young people and adults attended an open house at the new Lexington Youth Center located at 205 S. Randolph St. in a building owned by Manly Memorial Baptist Church.

Four 6’x6’ skylights were the main obstacles standing in the way of an approval of a request to build a new courts facility on Main and Washington streets.

- Plans for the construction of a pedestrian bridge over the Maury River at Jordans Point Park were scrapped after the bids came in too high. - One hundred twentysix students graduated from Washington and Lee University’s School of Law. “As you travel into the future, stay on the path of goodness,” commencement speaker Harry T. Edwards told the class.
