Trump Election Could Mean ACA Repeal

May 6, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: The Affordable Care Act is the greatest U.S. health-care achievement of the half century. And Biden keeps making it stronger.

Last year the national uninsured rate reached an all-time low, and this March only 10.4% of working- age people were uninsured – compared to 22.3% in 2010 when President Obama signed the ACA into law.

No surprise that a 59% majority of Americans support it, while only 39% oppose it – including Donald Trump.

Even though over 16 million people rely on it, Donald Trump still wants to repeal Obamacare. He said again at the start of the primaries that he would “replace” it. With what? He doesn’t know or care. He said, “I’m seriously looking at alternatives. We had a couple of Republican senators who campaigned for 6 years against it, and then raised their hands not to terminate it. It was a low point for the Republican Party, but we should never give up!”

Undermining health care was one of Trump’s most central election promises in 2015, and on his first day in office he issued an executive order to cripple ACA implementation. He continued to attack the law, repeatedly lying that it has already been halted. ACA enrollments declined during Trump’s term, but he failed to destroy it.

But now America is forced to fight this battle again. If reelected in November, Trump and a GOPcontrolled Congress plan to push through his most extremist legislation, including his promised Obamacare repeal. We need to protect the ACA. We need to protect America from Donald Trump. CHRIS GAVALER Lexington
