On Sunday, May 5, Nathaniel “Nate” Mayfield, was honored early by the High Bridge Scholarship Committee. A “participating visitor” for two years, he was a substitute teacher for Bob Gilbert’s Sunday school class. Nate was captain of coach John McCoy’s rugby team at VMI. Nate graduates from VMI on May 16. He was accompanied to church by fiancée Catherine Lyon. Nate and Catherine will be married a week after graduation. He will then begin his career as Army engineer, reporting first to Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and later transferring to the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, Calif.

High Bridge Presbyterian Church will celebrate Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 12. The annual Presbyterian Women’s birthday offering, with a reading by member-at-large chairperson Courtney Thomas, the Noisy Can offering and children’s church will also take place during the same service.

A celebration reception for the birthday offering will follow worship on the church lawn, weather permitting.

Attending the PW Spring Gathering for Peaks’ Presbytery at Raleigh Court PC in Roanoke recently were Carol Tolley and Connie Powell.

The afternoon circle meets May 14 at Carol Tolley’s.

On Sunday, May 19, High Bridge will honor its middle school, high school, and college graduates. Linda Wood, scholarship chairperson, and elder Scott Hannah will present the scholarships and gifts. A reception will follow the worship service.

Summer worship hours begin May 26 with worship service beginning at 10 a.m. with a break from Sunday school classes through the summer.

The Natural Bridge/Glasgow Food Pantry will be open on Saturday, May 11, from 9 to 11 a.m.
