The Rockbridge County High School boys tennis team split a pair of matches last week, earning a 5-4 road win over Alleghany last Tuesday before falling at Spotswood 8-0 on Friday.
With the nondistrict win over Alleghany (9-4), the Wildcats (9-5) avenged a 5-4 home loss to the Cougars on April 16.
In the rematch, the contest was very tight in doubles, with the Wildcats’ No. 1 pair of Nic Vargas and Nic Faulds winning 9-7 at No. 7, Alleghany winning 8-6 at No. 2, and RC’s No. 3 duo of Harrison Tanner and Barrett Kosmas earning an 8-6 win at No. 3.
The match came down to Vargas defeating Alleghany’s Eli Entsminger 8-6 at No. 1 singles to break the 4-4 tie. “Very glad for him, fighting hard,” said RC head coach Scott Youngdahl of Vargas.
With the loss to Spotswood (11-2 overall, 9-0 Valley District), the Wildcats fell to 5-4 in the Valley District. The closest match of the day was at No. 1 singles, with Vargas falling to Spotswood’s Jackson Knight 9-7.
Youngdahl called Spotswood “a very deep team,” but he said his players “competed well. I can’t fault their effort.”
The Wildcats were scheduled to play host to Turner Ashby yesterday and will conclude the regular season when they play a nondistrict home match against Staunton today, Wednesday, at 4:30 p.m. at the Lexington Country Club courts.
