Blues, Wildcats Compete At Dogwood Track Classic

Parry McCluer High School senior Kovyk Chandler broke his own school record in the boys’ 3200meter run at the Dogwood Track Classic on Saturday at the University of Virginia’s Lannigan Field in Charlottesville.

Chandler placed 13th in 9:13.25, breaking his previous school record of 9:31, set at the same meet last May, by nearly 18 seconds. The winner of the race was Abingdon’s Rives Boltwood, clocking 9:00.29.

Reviewing Chandler’s race, PM head coach Chris Poluikis said, “Everything just went perfectly. He got in the fast section, which means he was able to go right to the pack. He stayed right on the front pack.”

Poluikis noted that Chandler ran almost every lap at about the same pace, finishing the last lap in 64 seconds.

Also competing in the 3200 was PM freshman Kebryl Chandler, Kovyk’s younger brother, finishing 40th in 9:32.54, just shy of his personal record (PR).

PM’s Josh Cooper completed the 3200 10:04.72, a PR by 29 seconds, and teammate Logan Wheelock finished in 10:08.79, about a second shy of his PR. Also competing in the race was PM freshman, clocking 11:26.65, a PR by about nine seconds.

In the girls’ 3200-meter run, Kyra Lee led the Blues, placing 40th in 13:05.72, and teammate Jasmine De Souza finished 46th in 13:12.46, a PR by one second.

PM brought two throwers to the meet. Griffin Harlow tied for 12th place in the boys’ shot put with a toss of 46 feet, 7 inches, and Kamilah Richardson placed 24th in the girls shot put with a throw of 30-7.

The night before at Mountain View High School in Quicksburg, Harlow, a sophomore, won the shot put with a PR throw of 47-8. “In the past two meets, his numbers are consistently moving up,” said PM throwing coach Danny Cole. “This is a good time of the year. He has some corrections he needs to make, and we have identified those, and he is vigorously working on those. Once they are corrected, numbers will increase.”

Also competing at Mountain View was Rayshan Richardson, placing sixth in the shot put with a toss of 40-11.

In the girls’ discus, Kamilah Richardson finished 25th with a heave of 65-8.
