Two LDMS History Day Projects Advance To Nationals

LDMS Students Compete In Va. Competition

Ten students from Lylburn Downing Middle School presented projects at the Virginia History Day state competition in Richmond on April 27. They were among 8,000 students who created projects across the state and 470 students who qualified for state competition.

Two projects from LDMS will now advance to national competition in Washington, D.C., this June.

“Sister Rat: Virginia Military Institute and the Admission of Women; The Battle for Equality in a Military Education,” a website created based on the research of Sarah Edgar and Liesl Niebur, won second place in the group website category.

“The Fight for Flights: How the North Atlantic Route Case Changed Commercial Aviation Forever,” researched and created by Joe Vargas, Ru Bucy and Emil Hierman, won first place in the group website category and also won the Military Aviation Museum Award in aviation history with a $500 cash prize.

The NHD club at LDMS is sponsored by Laura Joyner and Amanda Conway.
