PM Baseball And Softball Teams Advance To District Finals, Roberts Wins Girls Tennis Singles Title

 

Monday, May 13 – Both the Parry McCluer High School baseball and softball teams advanced to the Pioneer District finals by winning their semifinal games at home on Monday evening in Buena Vista. The PM baseball team defeated Craig County 11-2, and the Blues cruised to a 19-0 win in five innings over Narrows in softball. 

Earlier in the day, PM senior Addisen Roberts won the Pioneer District singles title by defeating Raigen Clark of Narrows 8-0.

In the baseball game, the Fighting Blues (13-5 overall, 9-1 district), the top seed, trailed 1-0 against fifth-seeded Craig County (5-11, 3-8) after the first inning, but the Blues tied the game 1-1 in the second when Tyler Wade singled on a line drive to right field to bring home Brayden Holdren. PM added two runs in the third to go up 3-1.

The Rockets scored a run in the top of the fourth, but the Blues responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 6-2, and PM scored five runs in the sixth to put the game away.

The Blues racked up 10 hits, while Craig had six. Leading PM with two hits each were Wade, Peyton Ramsey and Curtis King.

Hayden Reynolds paced the Rockets with two hits.

On the mound, Wade pitched a complete game for PM, striking out six while allowing six hits, three walks and two earned runs.

Craig committed four errors, while PM had one.

On the softball field, the top-seeded Fighting Blues (9-7, 6-1) capitalized on pitching struggles by fourth-seeded Narrows (0-12-1, 0-6) and drew 15 walks. 

The Blues took a 2-0 lead in the first, added three runs in the second, and erupted for 13 runs in the third. PM scored its final run in the fourth.

Freshman Kendall Painter led PM with two hits, including a triple.

On the mound, junior Alysa Wheeler pitched all five innings for the Blues, striking out one and allowing three hits and no walks. 

Before the game, the Blues honored their three seniors: Payton Emore, Autumn Mundy and Gracey Shafer.

The PM girls tennis team is scheduled to play host to Narrows in the district semifinals on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at the Southern Virginia University courts.

The PM baseball and softball teams are scheduled to play host to the district finals next Monday, May 20, at 6 p.m. with the baseball team playing Narrows and the softball team facing Eastern Montgomery.
