Older adults with limited income may be eligible to receive $50 in vouchers to purchase fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables and cut herbs from participating farmers at the Lexington Farmers Market.
The Valley Program for Aging Services announced the voucher program this week.
To qualify for the program, individuals must be 60 years of age or older and live in the Rockbridge area.
Income limits have been increased substantially due a two-year expansion plan, according to VPAS. Income limits for 2024 are $2,322 a month (single person) or $3,152 a month (couple). Individuals cannot be an immediate family member or live with a participating farm market vendor. Only one voucher booklet per eligible senior or two coupon books per eligible couple per market season will be permitted.
The Farm Market Fresh for Seniors program vouchers are available on a limited, first-come, first-served basis. The coupons are valid June 1 through Nov. 18, 2024.
Valley Program for Aging Services will accept applications and distribute vouchers at the office located at 2137 Magnolia Ave. in Buena Vista beginning June 1. Online applications are available at https://www.vpas.info/farmmarket- fresh-seniors. Call (540) 261-7474 for further information.
The program is jointly sponsored by VPAS, the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services and the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
In addition to supporting senior nutrition, the program also supports local farmers and farmers’ markets in the area. The program is supported by the USDA, Food and Nutrition Service.
