‘Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid’ Of Trump

May 13, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: There are so many things that make me very concerned as we approach the upcoming presidential election. They are concerning because laws have been enacted to move the country backward rather than forward. Some states have enacted laws that prohibit the teaching of African American history. And with the elimination of teaching the history of a people what is essentially done is the elimination of the people.

Congress has failed to act on passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act. It’s no telling what will happen with voting rights if Donald Trump is reelected given that voter suppression exists in some states already.

Most recently a school district in Virginia voted to rename a school(s) after Confederate leaders. With the reelection of Donald Trump, there will be a resurgence of preserving the Confederacy.

I believe that Donald Trump does not care for the people, especially black people. It is beyond comprehension why some black people support him when evidence shows he is only concerned about himself. Not to mention that no former president in modern history has ever been tried for crimes allegedly committed.

Elections matter and they have always mattered. However, this upcoming presidential election matters like no other because if he is reelected this country will no longer be a country of democracy but an autocratic one. He has already stated if he is re-elected he will pardon the criminals who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, calling them patriots. Be afraid, be very afraid.

With the reelection of Biden and Harris, I sincerely believe democracy will be the order of the day.
