The Rockbridge County High School girls and boys track and field teams had strong performances in their final meet of the regular season on Tuesday of last week at Spotswood High School in Penn Laird.
Celia Jones led the RC girls by placing third in all three of her events. She ran the 100-meter dash in 13.7 seconds, finished the 100meter hurdles in 18.59 seconds, and leaped 14 feet, 9.5 inches in the long jump.
Jones was a member of the RC girls’ 4 X 100-meter relay team, which placed seventh in a season-best time of 56.6 seconds. Joining her in the relay were teammates Evelyn Mc-Clung, Abby Harding and Emily Carroll.
Harding placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in 18.68 seconds and finished seventh in the 100-meter dash in 14.51.
Carroll set new personal records (PRs) in both of her individual races, placing eighth in the 300-meter dash in 57.62 seconds and finishing 11th in the 100-meter hurdles in 20.08.
McClung placed 11th in the 100-meter dash in 14.93 seconds and came in 12th in the 200-meter dash in 30.97 seconds.
Leading the RC girls’ throwers was Sydney Knick, placing 11th in the shot put with a toss of 23-6 and finishing 23rd in the discus with a heave of 50-10.
Cate Skaggs came in 14th in the discus with a heave of 64-7 to place 16th in the shot put with a throw of 21-7.
Julieanne Woodward placed 25th in the shot put with a toss of 14-1, while Vaelen Drake finished 25th in the discus with a heave of 41-6.
Leading the RC boys was Jakob Bailey, placing 10th in the high jump by clearing 5-2, finishing 23rd in the long jump with a leap of 14-10, coming in 34th in the 100-meter dash in 14.4 seconds, and finishing 44th in the 200-meter dash in 26.8.
Konner Orebaugh placed 15th in the 200-meter dash in 24.59 seconds and finished 17th in the 100-meter dash in 12.32.
Abdus-Salam Lasisi placed 27th in the long jump with a leap of 11-5.25 and came in 53rd in the 200meter dash in a PR time of 30.7 seconds.
Today, Wednesday, the Wildcats will compete in the Valley District meet at East Rockingham High School in Elkton, starting at 5 p.m.
The top six individuals and top three relay teams, as well as those qualified by time or distance, will advance to the Region 3C meet, which is scheduled for Thursday, May 23, at Liberty Christian Academy in Lynchburg.
So far, Jones is the lone Region 3C qualifier, having done so by time in the girls’ 100-meter dash.
Looking ahead, RC head coach Jennifer Showalter said, “Congratulations to all athletes on a fantastic regular season. Let’s carry this momentum into the postseason next week at the Valley District meet.”
