Wildcats Blank Christiansburg
The Rockbridge County High School girls lacrosse team collected its ninth consecutive win last Monday, rolling to a 22-0 road victory over Christiansburg.
Ruby Goodhart and Brianna Roberts scored two goals apiece for the Wildcats (10-1), while Halina Homiak and Lola Mulitalo each posted four assists. Nineteen different RC players registered a goal in the game, and the ’Cats recorded 20 assists on their 22 markers.
RC head coach Susan Nye was pleased with the way that her team spread out the offense against a struggling Blue Demons squad. Christiansburg fell to 0-10 on the season with a 21-0 loss at Hidden Valley later in the week.
“This game is not about the stats,” Nye said. “It’s about getting the entire team involved in the offense, and allowing players who normally don’t score to have that opportunity.”
Maddie Dahl and Anna Nye each collected eight draw controls, while Nye recorded five caused turnovers and Emma Johnson notched three takeaways. Fifteen different Wildcats forced at least one turnover in the game.
RC wraps up the regular season with two home games this week. The ’Cats were scheduled to face Cave Spring on Monday, and they’ll welcome in William Byrd this evening.
With the prospect of another deep postseason run beckoning, the Wildcats have several strategic objectives for their final two games prior to the Region 4D tournament.
“We will be working on having our offense run plays smoothly and efficiently and finding the best shot, not the first opportunity to score,” Coach Nye said. “A team goal is to minimize our turnovers, especially in our transitions. The defense is working on aggressive pressure on the ball and getting in a better defensive position with cutters.”
Start time for tonight’s contest against the Terriers is slated for 7 p.m. Before the game, the Wildcats will honor their six seniors.
