Lambda Jedi Wins 47th R&R
The Lambda Jedi Team won the 47th annual Lexington Road and River Relay on Saturday, May 4.
With the victory, the Lambda Jedi Team broke the five-year winning streak of the Jamaican Bobsled Team. Team members who claimed the Silver Cup were William and Mac Malambri, Henry Haden, Eli Catanzaro and Colin Verrett.
The relay welcomed 37 teams, including 12 one-person teams. Last year, there were 27 teams. The Lambda Jedi Team finished the 16.1-mile run/bicycle/river/run course in 1 hour, 30 minutes, 57.55 seconds.
The relay consisted of a 3.5-mile run from the Rockbridge Regional Library to Beans Bottom, a 9.1-mile bicycle ride on paved, hilly roads; a 2.2-mile canoe/kayak section from Beans Bottom to Jordans Point, and then a 1.3-mile running loop that went on the Woods Creek Trail and started and ended at Jordans Point Park. Participants endured rain during the early part of the race before the rain let up.
Placing second overall and winning the men’s individual title was Rockbridge County High School freshman Tyler Ludtke, finishing in 1:34:37.12. Finishing third overall and placing second among men’s individuals was David Burkwall, crossing the line in 1:36.26.41.
The women’s individual winner was Zinnia Gibson, placing 11th overall in 1:46:39.13.
Claiming the women’s team title was The Unsponsored Team, placing 21st overall in 2:02:48.96.
Winning the mixed gender team title was the High Speed Team, placing eighth in 1:41:50.27.
Race director Grace Crickenberger worked with Clay Devening and the Lexington Sunrise Rotary Club to organize the event.
“I believe that this was an incredibly successful year,” said Crickenberger. “We raised more money than in years past which will be used to support community charitable organizations and we had a better turnout than in years past. Many of the participants were first timers, and they all really enjoyed the event.”
