PM Girls Split With Bath

PM Girls Split With Bath

Chargers Garner District Tennis Title

The Parry McCluer High School girls tennis team split a pair of matches with Pioneer District rival Bath County last week, earning a 5-4 home win last Tuesday before falling 5-3 in the match to determine the district regular-season champion last Wednesday in Covington.

The Rockbridge County High School girls concluded the season with a pair of 9-0 Valley District road losses, falling to Turner Ashby last Tuesday and to Harrisonburg last Wednesday.

Before last Tuesday’s match against Bath County (7-3 overall, 4-1 district), the Fighting Blues (9-4, 4-2) honored their three seniors: Addisen Roberts, McKenna Hickman and Marley Convers. Roberts won at No. 1 singles, and Hickman won at No. 4 singles.

The Blues, who had lost at Bath County 6-3 on April 30, won the first rematch by claiming three of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles matches.

To determine the regular-season title, the teams faced off at Clifton Academy in Covington last Wednesday, when Bath won 5-3.

PM head coach Alyssa Sewell praised her No. 3 doubles team of Hickman and Elizabeth Truslow by prevailing 8-6 for “a great win” to get the team into singles with a shot to win.

The Wildcats (4-10 overall, 0-10 Valley District), who had lost at home against Turner Ashby (115, 6-4), were unable to win any matches in the rematch on Tuesday of last week. RC was missing its No. 6 singles player.

Last Wednesday, Harrisonburg, which had beaten RC 9-0 in Lexington on April 24, won by the same score. Harrisonburg had a special recognition for its seniors before the match, and the Wildcats honored their two seniors, Katherine Lotts and Addie Wright.

Although the match didn’t count toward the team score, RC’s Ava Crocker won her exhibition match 8-4 at No. 7 singles.

For PM, Roberts was scheduled to play in the Pioneer District singles tournament against the top player from Narrows on Monday at Glenvar.

The Wildcats were scheduled to play in the Valley District singles and doubles tournaments yesterday and today, Wednesday, at TA. For the postseason schedule and updates, visit www. thenews-gazette.com.
